The Ticket to Work program (TWP) is an initiative of the United States Social Security Administration (SSA) specially created for Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB) recipients. Once the individual agrees to work with these groups, a participant plan will be created so they can be referred to employers for screening and training.

Who Are Eligible?

Most beneficiaries are eligible to participate in the TWP based on SSA-provided criteria. If they’re interested in going back to work, they’re encouraged to contact the employment network nearest to them so they can be paired with an employer.

What Happens to the Other Benefits?

One of the biggest questions DIB recipients ask is what will happen to their benefits. They worry that the opportunity will nullify their coverage. It’s a valid concern because, if their new job doesn’t work out, they’ll have a hard time supporting themselves. Luckily, participants will continue to receive health assistance as well as their financial aid if their employment doesn’t go as expected. Various incentives are also provided to ensure they’re supported throughout their transition.

Do Earnings Affect the Benefits?

Once they have completed the trial period and they’re still working with significant earnings, the SSA will consider them a non-disabled person. This means their benefits will stop. But, they may be reinstated if their income drops or their medical condition recurs or worsens. If, however, their pay increases, their Supplementary Security Income (SSI) will be reduced and adjusted accordingly until they’re no longer dependent on them.

How Does SSA Determine Progress?

The employment network that helped them will communicate with the hiring company to see how they’re doing and whether they’re coping well. They’ll then relay this information to the SSA to figure out if all the goals set on the work plan are being achieved. This review occurs every year.
